Who can join Alpha Phi Omega?
We welcome everyone in Alpha Phi Omega! We're always looking for new friends; if you're interested see our Pledge-Requirements page.
If Alpha Phi Omega is a fraternity, can women join?
Absolutely! Alpha Phi Omega started as a scouting organization, but in 1976 voted to allow women, and since then has been a co-ed fraternity, with equal rights for men and women.
If Alpha Phi Omega started as a scouting organization, does that mean you have to have been a boy scout to join?
Not at all! Alpha Phi Omega started as a scouting organization, but since has grown to become its own unique way to get involved in community service. Though we are still connected with the Boy Scouts in many ways, mostly through helping them with various activities (Merit-Badge-University and Klondike), no previous scouting experience is necessary.
How is Alpha Phi Omega different from a traditional fraternity or sorority?
We're different in a number of ways. Primarily, we are not affliated with Greek life; we are a student organization. This means that students who are already part of a traditional fraternity or sorority can join us without conflict! Our main purpose is to promote community service and friendship, and anyone is welcome to join.
Does Alpha Phi Omega only do community service events?
No, what makes us different from other service groups, such as the service group Circle K, is that we are a fraternity as well. We do service events, but we also plan fellowship events, which are basically just hanging out and having fun together. They can be as simple as getting together at one person's house to watch movies or as involved as having dances! Each semester we have a dance - in the fall it's semi-formal, and in the spring it's formal.
What kind of community service does Alpha Phi Omega do?
Alpha Phi Omega is involved with lots of different community service projects. We try to offer service events that will appeal to people with a variety of interests. Some groups that we volunteer with often are the Denver Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity, Colorado Friendship, BeadForLife, and the Boy Scouts of America.
What kind of a time commitment is being a member of Alpha Phi Omega?
Alpha Phi Omega takes as much time as you are willing to put into it. The semester that you pledge, the requirement is that you complete at least 16 hours of community service, plus 2 hours of fundraising and 1 hour of fellowship. To stay active each semester you need to complete at least 16 hours of community service, but you can always be an associate member. As an associate member you are still welcome to come to any service, fundraising, or fellowship events and you just do what you can.
Does Alpha Phi Omega cost money to join?
Initially yes, as a new pledge you'll pay $30 to initiate and $35 to activate. However, we don't want that to discourage anyone from joining! We have funds set aside for those who would like to join but who cannot make the monetary contribution.
How do I join?
We're so excited that you're interested in joining the Gamma Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega here at The University of Colorado! To join you should first attend an informational meeting; check our calendar to find the next one. There will also be free food, the chance to meet new friends, and lots of fun! From there you should come to our pledge meetings, which are Monday nights at 6:30 PM in ECCR 265.
